Our verdict
- Go
- Arrive Thursday or Friday for the expo, race Sunday
- Stay
- Mitte if you are running, Kreuzberg if you are watching
- Book by
- January 2027, right after the lottery result
The flattest of the majors and the one most likely to produce a personal best, which is why 50,000 people want a bed within walking distance of the Brandenburg Gate. Berlin is big enough to absorb it — but Mitte is not, and Mitte is where everyone looks first.

Getting there
Berlin Brandenburg is 45 minutes from the centre on the FEX or regional trains, and they run from early morning. There is no need for a taxi at either end of this trip.
The start and finish are both by the Brandenburg Gate, inside the S-Bahn ring, so almost anywhere central works. On race morning the U-Bahn and S-Bahn run early and free travel is normally included with the race number.
Road closures cover the whole centre from before dawn until mid-afternoon. If you are watching, pick one spot on the course and stay there — crossing it takes longer than the runners do.

Questions
- When is the 2027 Berlin Marathon?
- Sunday 26 September 2027, with the expo in the days before. From 2027 it runs as the Generali Berlin-Marathon.
- How do I get a place?
- A lottery in the autumn before, plus charity and tour-operator entries. The lottery result is what moves the hotel market, so book a refundable room before it lands.
- Where should I stay to reach the start?
- Anywhere inside the S-Bahn ring works. Mitte is walkable and priced accordingly; Charlottenburg and Kreuzberg are twenty minutes by U-Bahn for a third less.
- Is the expo compulsory?
- Yes, numbers are collected in person. Go on Thursday or Friday, not Saturday.
- Is the course really that fast?
- It is flat, wide and looped around a compact city — the men's and women's world records have both been set here. That is why it is the hardest major to get a bed for.
