Patriots' Day is a Massachusetts state holiday. The city has the day off, which is why the crowd along the course is the size it is.

Should I stay near the start?

No. Hopkinton is a village 26 miles out and runners are bussed there. Everything about the logistics points at staying near the finish.

When the field is decided. Qualifier registration runs the previous September, and Back Bay empties the same week the acceptances go out.

How many nights do I need?

Three: Saturday to Tuesday. The expo takes a day, the race takes a day, and nobody enjoys an airport on the evening of a marathon.

Getting there

Logan is twenty-five minutes from Back Bay by subway or taxi, and the Silver Line from the airport is free inbound.

The start is in Hopkinton, 26 miles west. Runners take the official buses from Boston Common in the early morning — there is no useful way to get there yourself, which is why staying near the finish rather than the start is the right call.

Patriots’ Day is a state holiday: the subway runs a holiday schedule and the roads along the course close from mid-morning.
