Edinburgh, United Kingdom

29 Dec 2027 – 1 Jan 2028

Expected, based on previous years

Edinburgh's Hogmanay runs the same three nights every year — the torchlight procession on 29 December, the street party and concert on 31 December, and the Loony Dook on 1 January. The 2027 programme is normally published in the autumn.

Three nights, one of which triples the price of every room in the city. Staying inside the street-party cordon is worth paying for in a way it almost never is elsewhere: at 1am on 1 January there are no taxis, no late trains and 40,000 people walking in every direction.

Getting there

The tram runs from the airport to Princes Street in half an hour and keeps running late on Hogmanay itself. Waverley sits under the street party, which is both convenient and a reason to arrive before the 31st.

The street party is ticketed and the centre is fenced from the afternoon of 31 December. If your hotel is inside the cordon, carry the booking confirmation; if it is outside, plan a walk home rather than a taxi.

Scottish New Year is a two-day public holiday. Shops, buses and trains all run reduced services on 1 and 2 January.

Questions

When is Edinburgh's Hogmanay 2027?
29 December 2027 to 1 January 2028, following the usual shape: torchlight on the 29th, street party on the 31st, Loony Dook on the 1st. The programme is confirmed in the autumn.
Do I need a ticket?
For the street party and the concert in the Gardens, yes, and they sell out. The torchlight procession is ticketed too but far easier.
Is staying in the centre worth the money?
On 31 December, yes. There are no taxis and no late trains out of the centre, and walking an hour in a Scottish winter at 1am is the alternative.
How cold is it?
Around freezing, often wet, and the street party is outdoors for six hours. Layers, not fashion.
What is the Loony Dook?
A New Year's Day swim in the Firth of Forth at South Queensferry, under the bridges. People dress up; the water is four degrees.
