Our verdict
- Go
- Any weekday in the first two weeks; avoid both Advent weekends
- Stay
- Around the station
- Book by
- June 2027 for a weekend, September for a weekday
The oldest Christmas market in France and the most concentrated of the four on this site: a dozen markets inside one walkable island. That island is also the hotel supply, which is why Strasbourg prices harder than Nuremberg on the same dates — and why the tram to Germany matters.

Which days to go
| Day | What happens | Crowd | Hotel price | Our call |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Opening weekend26–28 Nov 2027 | The market opens on the Friday evening and the island fills immediately | ×2.6 | Atmospheric and shoulder to shoulder; come for the opening or come for the quiet | |
| First week29 Nov – 3 Dec 2027 | Every stall open, the island working normally, the lights on by four | ×1.4 | The week to book — the same market, a third of the crowd | |
| Advent weekends4–19 Dec 2027 | Peak season; coach parties from across the Rhine and the Vosges | ×3 | Weekdays in between are still fine; Saturdays are crowd control | |
| The last days20–24 Dec 2027 | Locals shopping, shorter queues, the market closing at lunchtime on the 24th | ×1.8 | Quietly the nicest few days, if you can be away from home that week |
Hotel price is what the same hotel costs on these dates against its rate four weeks before the event. Crowd and price are our estimates from how the event has run, not live rates.

Getting there
The TGV from Paris takes under two hours and runs all day; Strasbourg Entzheim is twenty minutes from the centre by shuttle train. From Germany, the ICE network puts Frankfurt and Stuttgart within two hours.
Everything happens on the Grande Île and it is all walkable — a dozen separate markets between Place Broglie, the cathedral and Petite France. The island closes to traffic at busy times.
Tram D crosses the Rhine to Kehl in Germany in about twenty minutes, which is the cheapest useful trick in this guide: German hotel prices, French market, one tram ticket.

Questions
- When is the 2027 Strasbourg Christmas market?
- Expected 26 November to 24 December 2027 — it opens the Friday before the first Advent. The city confirms the dates in the autumn and has sometimes run to 27 December.
- Do I need a ticket?
- No. The markets are free and open to the street; the cost is the vin chaud and the bed.
- Is staying in Germany really sensible?
- Kehl is twenty minutes away on tram D and prices like an ordinary German town in December. For a family or a longer stay it is the difference that pays for the trip.
- How does it compare with Nuremberg?
- Strasbourg is more markets in a smaller space and feels busier; Nuremberg is one great square with a stricter tradition. The dates are nearly identical, so most people pick one.
- Which days are quiet?
- The first full week, and weekdays between the Advent weekends. The second and third Advent Saturdays are the two days to avoid entirely.
