The Old Course is in a town with a few hundred hotel rooms, and the Open brings a quarter of a million people across the week. Practice days are the value: the same players, the same links, a fraction of the ticket and no fight for a bed.

Getting there

There is no station in St Andrews. Trains from Edinburgh and Dundee stop at Leuchars, five miles away, and buses run from there to the town and the park-and-ride.

During Open week the R&A runs park-and-ride sites off the A91 — driving to the course itself is not an option, and the town’s own streets close.

From Edinburgh the train to Leuchars takes about an hour; add the bus and the walk and plan on ninety minutes each way.

Questions

When is the 2027 Open?
The 155th Open runs 11–18 July 2027 at the Old Course, St Andrews. The four competition rounds are Thursday 15 to Sunday 18 July; the days before are practice.
Are practice days worth a trip?
They are the best-value days in golf. Tickets cost a fraction of a competition day, the whole field is on the course, and you can stand where you like.
Can I stay in St Andrews?
Only if you booked a year or two out. The town has a few hundred hotel rooms; after that it is Dundee, the East Neuk or Edinburgh.
How do I get there without a car?
Train to Leuchars, then the bus. It is the normal way in and it runs reinforced all week.
Is it true the Old Course is public?
Yes — it is a public links owned by the town, which is why the Open keeps coming back here and why the tee times outside Open week go by ballot.
